A Beginner’s Guide to American Mahjong: Strategy, Socializing, and Style

Section 1: The Essentials (The Vibe)

“American Mahjong is more than a game—it’s a social ritual. To begin your journey, you’ll need a few essentials that blend tradition with modern elegance.”

  • The Set: A standard American set contains 166 tiles (including the crucial 8 Jokers).
  • The Card: Every year, the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) releases a new card with winning patterns. You’ll need this to win!
  • The Gear: 4 racks and pushers to hold your tiles and extend your "wall."

Section 2: Understanding the Tiles

“Unlike other versions, American Mahjong features unique symbols designed for clarity and artistic flair.”

  • The Suits: Dots, Bams (Bamboos), and Craks (Characters).
  • The Honors: Winds (North, East, West, South) and Dragons (Red, Green, and White/Soap).
  • The Wilds: The Joker. These are your best friends—they can substitute for any tile in a combination of 3 or more.
  • The Flowers: 8 Flower tiles that add luck and beauty to your hand.

Section 3: The Charleston (The Unique Twist)

“The Charleston is the heart of the American game—a fast-paced ritual of passing tiles to curate your perfect hand.”

  1. The First Pass: Right, Over, Left.
  2. The Second Pass: Left, Over, Right (Optional).
  3. The Courtesy Pass: A final optional trade between across-the-table players. Tip: This is where the strategy begins. Pay attention to what your neighbors are passing!

Section 4: The Gameplay Loop

“Strategy meets serendipity. The game flows in a rhythm of picking and discarding.”

  • Picking: On your turn, draw a tile from the wall.
  • Discarding: Place a tile in the center and announce its name clearly (e.g., "Three Bam!").
  • Calling a Tile: If someone discards a tile you need to complete a "Pung," "Kong," or "Quint," you can call it—but be prepared to reveal that part of your hand!

Section 5: How to Win (The Mahjong!)

“The ultimate goal: Be the first to complete a hand matching one of the patterns on the official NMJL card.”

When you have all 14 tiles required for a specific pattern, shout "Mahjong!" and reveal your winning hand. It’s time to celebrate—and perhaps pour another round of cocktails.
