The Complete Mahjong Starter Kit (2026): Set, Card, Mat and Racks

Most “what do I need to start” lists are padded. This one is not. A new American mahjong player needs exactly two things to play and three more to be comfortable, and everything else can wait. Here is the whole kit, in the order to buy it, with three complete builds at three budgets.

The two things you cannot play without

  1. A set with jokers. American mahjong needs 152 tiles in play including 8 jokers — which rules out every 136–144 tile Chinese set. Our $69.90 melamine sets ship 166 tiles (152 plus spares), a free carry bag and four rule cards.
  2. The 2026 NMJL card. The annual card is the menu of winning hands, and no set includes it — the League sells it for about $15. The 2026 card is valid through March 31, 2027. While it ships, our printable rule card covers setup and play order for free.

The three things you will want within a month

  1. A mat ($39.90). Quiets the washing noise, stops walls from sliding, protects the table, marks the discard zone for beginners. The Bohemian Floral mat is the bestseller; Oriental and Christmas versions are the same build in different prints.
  2. Racks and pushers ($7 each). One acrylic rack-and-pusher per player. You can learn without them; you will not want to host without them.
  3. A bag that is not the case. The included carry bag handles most trips; if your set starts traveling weekly, the Socialite rack-and-bag bundle ($39.90) packs tiles and four racks in one shoulder bag.

Three complete builds

Build What's in it Total Best for
Build What's in it Total Who it's for
The Lean Start Melamine set $69.90 + NMJL card ~$15 ≈ $85 Learning solo or joining someone else's game
The Comfortable Host Lean Start + mat $39.90 + 4 racks $28 ≈ $153 Hosting a weekly four-player game at your table
The Gift Build Crystal Shimmer $149 + card + mat ≈ $205 A gift that is complete the day it is unwrapped

What to skip (for now)

  • Score keepers, fancy dice, tile pushers beyond the basic four. Nice later, invisible to a beginner's first twenty games.
  • The $199–$229 premium sets. Beautiful objects — our luxury guide covers them honestly — but the $69.90 set teaches the identical game. Upgrade when the game is a habit, not before.
  • A second set. One set per table, always. Spend the money on the card and the mat first.

The last item (free)

Bookmark the free practice game. It plays full American rules against three AI opponents, no download, no sign-up — and it is the difference between a starter kit that gets used and one that gathers dust while everyone waits for “someone who knows how.” Pair it with the seven-day plan and the kit pays for itself in the first week.

That is the whole list. Set, card, then mat and racks when the habit forms — everything else is decoration on a game that was already complete. Buy the lean version this week and you can be washing tiles by the weekend; the only wrong starter kit is the one still sitting in a cart.

Quick Answers

What do I need to start playing American mahjong?
Two things: an American set (152 tiles in play including jokers — ours ship 160–166 with spares) and the current NMJL card (about $15). A mat, racks and a travel bag are the comfortable next three.

How much does a complete mahjong starter kit cost?
About $85 for the lean version (set + card), about $153 fully equipped for hosting (set, card, mat, four racks), and about $205 for a gift-grade build with an acrylic set.

Do I need a mat to play mahjong?
Not to play — but within a month most players buy one. A $39.90 neoprene mat quiets the tiles, stops walls from sliding, protects the table and marks the discard zone.

Should a beginner buy an expensive mahjong set?
No. The $69.90 melamine set plays the identical game to the $229 sets and survives being dropped, washed and traveled with. Upgrade to premium materials once the weekly game is an established habit.
