1. Sort Your Rack Every Turn
A sorted rack is a thinking rack. Tiles grouped by suit and ordered by number let you spot gaps and near-pungs instantly — and stop you from missing a tile you already hold. Sounds trivial; wins games.
2. Commit to a Hand Family by the End of the Charleston
Wandering hands lose. By the last Charleston pass, you should know your section of the card and be keeping only what serves it. Every turn of indecision is a turn of your opponents' progress.
3. Count Pairs, Not Pretty Tiles
Two-of-a-kind becomes a pung with one tile; three-of-a-kind becomes a kong with one claim. Pairs and triples are momentum. A rack full of unconnected singles is a photo, not a hand. When evaluating your tiles, count how many are one step from exposure — that number is your true hand quality.
4. Track the Wall
Roughly 152 tiles, 14 per player, the rest in the wall. You don't need precision — just three zones: early (flexibility matters most), middle (commit or fold), and late (speed and safety beat elegance). Your best play in each zone is different; playing the late wall like the early wall is why "almost" players almost win.
5. Make Exposures Work for You
Exposing a set isn't just progress — it unlocks claiming rights and shapes opponents' fear. But each exposure also tells the table your story. A good rule: expose when the set was hard-won (claimed from discards) or when it forces opponents to defend. Hold back when your remaining tiles are secret weapons.
6. Scan Exposures Before Every Discard
Two-second ritual: check every exposure against the card. What is each player missing? Your discard decision should be shaped as much by their gaps as by your own. This is the single habit opponents notice fastest — when you start feeding them nothing, they feel it.
7. Flowers Are Secretly Gold
Flowers can't be claimed from discards, and many card hands require them. Each flower you hold is a tile nobody can deny you — and each flower you see in another player's exposure tells you their hand family. Trade value for information both ways.
8. Don't Half-Switch Hands
The worst place in mahjong is straddling two hands: half your rack serves the old plan, half the new. If you switch, switch completely — ship away every tile that served the dead hand, even the ones you love. Sentiment loses games.

Every turn, before drawing, check: can I exchange a tile for an opponent's exposed joker? It's free value converting dead weight into a wild card.
